ISNA Calls for Release of Christian Girl in Pakistan

(Washington, DC - August 24, 2012) The Islamic Society of North America condemns the arrest of Ramsha Masih, a young Christian girl who was accused of burning pages from a book that included verses from the Qur'an. It is believed that the girl suffers from Down syndrome.

According to Islamic law, a person who is both a minor and has an intellectual disability cannot be held accountable for his/her actions. "I ask the Pakistani Muslim community to act with compassion and restraint," said ISNA President Imam Mohamed Magid. "We call on the government of Pakistan to immediately release Ramsha to her family and ensure their safety."

ISNA remains deeply concerned about the treatment of religious minorities in Muslim-majority communities and has been engaged in work to address this issue for the past several years. In 2011, following the assassination of Minister of Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti and Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, ISNA called on the Pakistani government to take every measure necessary to secure the rights of religious minorities in Pakistan, as well as their safety and those of their places of worship. Within the past year, we have continued to work on these issues by consulting with Muslim scholars from around the world to create a mechanism for Islamic standards and protocols on the rights of religious minorities in the Muslim-majority communities.

Condolences on the Passing of former ISNA Majlis member Dr. Mohammad Aslam Cheema

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Dr. Mohammad Aslam Cheema.  "Verily it is to Allah (swt) that we all belong and it is to Him that we shall all return."

The Islamic Society of North America would like to extend its heart-felt condolences to the family of Dr. Cheema.  Dr. Cheema is survived by his daughter, Tehmina Akbar (married to Dr. Nisar Akbar), a grandson, Firaas Akbar, and a granddaughter, Emaan Akbar. Dr. Cheema's wife, Sorraiya, preceded him in death.
Dr. Cheema lived in the Milwaukee area since 1972.  He was one of the early founders of the organization that later came to be known as the Islamic Society of Milwaukee (ISM).  He served as the President of the ISM from 1986 to 1988.  In recent years, Dr. Cheema has served on the ISM Board of Trustees, first as its Secretary from 2004 to 2009 and then as its Chairman from 2009 to the present.  He also participated in the ISM Book Club up until his death, sharing his knowledge with others. In addition to serving as ISM President in its early years, he held a variety of other positions with the ISM or its predecessor organizations from 1976 to 1986.

Dr. Cheema also was active in several national Muslim organizations. Among others, he served as a Member of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) Shura from 1985 to 1988; Trustee of the North American Islamic Trust from 1988 to 1990; President of the American Muslim Council from 1993 to 1996 as well as serving for many years on its Board of Directors; and most recently working to form a political action committee to defend the rights of U.S. Muslims.

Anger as Iran bans women from universities - Telegraph

It follows years in which Iranian women students have outperformed men, a trend at odds with the traditional male-dominated outlook of the country's religious leaders. Women outnumbered men by three to two in passing this year's university entrance exam.

Senior clerics in Iran's theocratic regime have become concerned about the social side-effects of rising educational standards among women, including declining birth and marriage rates.

Tribal ties shape Saudi aid to Syrian rebels

The borders of Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Lebanon were drawn up in 1916 by French and British cartographers, indifferent to the realities of tribal life straddling the new lines emerging over the desert sands.

Today those historic tribal ties are paying dividends for Syria's rebels. The ancestral connections are igniting sympathies among some of the region's richest people. Thousands of Saudis, Kuwaitis, and Qataris share tribal kinship with their Syrian cousins.
