BBC News - Al-Rahma Islamic Centre destroyed in 'hate crime' fire

"Muslims have been physically attacked, mosques burnt down, cemeteries vandalised and social media is full of anti-Muslim hatred and violent threats towards Muslims.

"More needs to be done to protect the Muslim community."

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "There is no place in an open, tolerant and diverse city like London for hate, for prejudice, for violence."

He added: "Londoners will see this for what it is - cowardly, pathetic and utterly pointless."

The Saudi Marathon Man : The New Yorker

"A twenty-year-old man who had been watching the Boston Marathon had his body torn into by the force of a bomb. He wasn't alone; a hundred and seventy-six people were injured. But he was the only one who, while in the hospital being treated for his wounds, had his apartment searched in "a startling show of force," as his fellow-tenants described it to the Boston Herald, with a "phalanx" of officers and agents and two K9 units. He was the one whose belongings were carried out in paper bags as his neighbors watched; whose roommate, also a student, was questioned for five hours..."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CAIR Urges Prayers, Blood Donations for Boston Bomb Victims

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/15/13) –- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, this evening condemned the bomb attacks earlier today on the Boston Marathon that left at least two people dead and many more injured.

CAIR urged all Americans to pray for the victims and their families and asked the Boston-area Muslim community to donate blood for those who were wounded.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

"American Muslims, like Americans of all backgrounds, condemn in the strongest possible terms today's cowardly bomb attack on participants and spectators of the Boston Marathon.

"We urge people of all faiths to pray for the victims and their loved ones and for the speedy recovery of those injured. We also call for the swift apprehension and punishment of the perpetrators.

"While spiritual measures can serve to comfort those in physical and emotional pain, we also call on Muslims and others in the Boston area to donate blood through the Red Cross as a concrete show of support for the bomb attack victims. Those who were participating in the marathon or were watching the event should contact authorities with any potential eyewitness information they may have."

The Washington-based civil rights organization urged Muslims to listen to government announcements to determine other steps they might take to help first responders and those impacted by the tragic event.

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

BBC News - Cyrus Cylinder: How a Persian monarch inspired Jefferson

The 2,600-year-old clay cylinder, almost the size of an American football, was made on the order of the Persian King Cyrus after he captured Babylon in 539 BC.

Referred to by some scholars as the "first bill on human rights", the cuneiform inscriptions on the cylinder appear to encourage freedom of worship throughout the Persian Empire and to allow deported people to return to their homelands.

Chinese Parents Demand Gay Marriage - ABC News

The letter was published by Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), a gay rights group based in the southern China city of Guangzhou. The group helps parents to communicate with their gay children.

In the open letter, the parents wrote: "Some of our children have been with their same-sex partners for almost 10 years; they care for and love each other deeply, but they are unable to legally authorize medical treatment for their partners when they are ill and in need of an operation. As the parents of homosexuals, we are often worried, because they cannot legally marry, and this impacts to various degrees their ability to adopt; authorize necessary medical treatment; inherit their partner's assets, or even buy an apartment."

Christians decry Muslim mob's arson spree

"The attack is yet another shameful incident against a vulnerable community and further confirmation of the slide toward extremism in society on the one hand and, on the other hand, the apathy and inaction that has become the norm among the police," the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said in a statement.

The group accused police of arresting Christians in the incident "while those who went on a rampage and can easily be identified from television footage have gone scot-free."

Mob Torches Dozens of Pakistani Christian Homes - ABC News

Two items this horrible and insane tragedy demonstrates:

1) Pakistan's endless cycle of communal violence will never stop until
people are educated, the country is lifted out of poverty and
religious leaders forcefully speak out against these crimes.

2) There are always good people in this world

"The scene was chaotic. An Associated Press reporter said roughly 150
homes were torched. One man was seen carrying a dog and some puppies
from a burning house. Refrigerators, washing and sewing machines,
cooking pots, beds and other household goods were ripped from homes,
smashed and burned in the streets.

One Christian couple from the neighborhood said they went to their
Muslim neighbors' house on Friday night after people came looking for
the Christian man accused of blasphemy. Ishaq Masih said the Muslim
neighbors sheltered the couple for the night and then gave them money
to leave the area in the morning."

BBC News - Getting away from 'the world' Hutterite-style

Groups who leave society and live in isolation has always fascinated
me. Here's a story about a group called the Hutterites.

"There are 500 similar "colonies" across Canada and in the American
states of North and South Dakota, home to a total of 50,000
Hutterites.

Hutterites are an Anabaptist sect, founded by Austrian preacher Jakob
Hutter, in the 16th Century. They fled to North America in the 19th
Century to avoid persecution, but many Hutterites still speak with a
heavy German accent and they mostly talk and pray in a German
dialect."

Regardless of whether one is a literalist or a relativist, it seems to
me that the true abomination lies in centuries of vilifying,

BBC News - Hijab for a day: Non-Muslim women who try the headscarf

For many people, the hijab is a symbol of oppression and divisiveness. It's a visible target that often bears the brunt of a larger debate about Islam in the West.

World Hijab Day is designed to counteract these controversies. It encourages non-Muslim women (or even Muslim women who do not ordinarily wear one) to don the hijab and experience what it's like to do so, as part of a bid to foster better understanding.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights groups release joint statement on immigration reform as U.S. senators release set of principles for comprehensive immigration reform

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 National lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights organizations, including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund, today released a joint statement reiterating the call for a comprehensive immigration policy that ensures fair treatment of LGBT people and families under immigration law. It comes as a bipartisan group of U.S. senators today released a set of principles for comprehensive immigration reform, and as President Obama prepares to announce his own immigration plans tomorrow.

The full text of the LGBT groups' joint statement is below:

"We are fully committed to and deeply understand the need for this nation to adopt a humane and effective comprehensive immigration policy which places a premium value on justice, dignity, respect and opportunity.

"Any legislation must include the ability of couples in same-sex relationships to sponsor their spouse or permanent-partner in the same way opposite-sex couples have long been able to under current immigration law.

"We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with those striving for and dreaming of a nation that embraces all who come here seeking a better life. We look forward to working with Congress, the White House and every community harmed by our broken immigration system to finally achieve the comprehensive reforms we all so desperately need."

Re: [sogi] 'Getting worse': Egypt's gays fear government crackdown - World News

Hi Chelsea,
With equal respect, I helped in a small way to found the EIPR in 2002,
I've followed their work for a decade, and I have clear memories of
what their original mission was --- as well as of the climate of
indifference they were originally responding to. I don't think it's a
question of attacking them. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with
expressing a disappointment which I think is common among some
communities here in Egypt. It would have been possible to say, in the
context of the article, something on the order of: "LGBT issues are a
priority for us as a question of the right to privacy and freedom from
government interference, which is a priority for all Egyptians." That
would have been perfectly consistent with the EIPR's original vision.
Saying "It's not a priority," as a general defensive dismissal, is
not. It's possible they were misquoted, since I don't think the
article is very accurate in general, but it's of a piece with other
things that have been said in the last few years.

Of course the EIPR is overstretched. Everybody in civil society in
Egypt is overstretched. But they're the best-funded human rights group
in the country, and at the moment one of the least vulnerable. If they
can't express a moderate degree of public support, nobody in the
country can or will.

Re: [sogi] 'Getting worse': Egypt's gays fear government crackdown - World News

Greetings everyone, hope you are all doing well.

I was reading this article earlier this morning, and I have few concerns about:

·         First, for an article entitled "Egypt's gays fear government crackdown", this article seemed like a facilitation offered to the government, asking for an actual crack-down. After talking to some individuals who have spoken to Duncan Golestani, I learned they have asked him clearly not to mention some details, yet he did. So, I can see that this article holds no true concern for any cause; it is a very exaggerating post, where the author is obviously trying to make it as sexy as possible. I got the sense that it is exposing many people to danger, not only individuals but also private communities.

·    Second, it makes no sense to believe that new laws might be created to discriminate against homosexuals, or to criminalize homosexuality. Homosexual acts already fall into the category of debauchery in the Egyptian law, which is better for the government than having a law stating "we arrest gay people" to minimize the amount of international rage as much as possible. So, the MB themselves do not need that sort of battle right now.

·         About EIPR, I'm sorry, but I totally agree with what Scott had said about how the administration has forgotten or at least sidelined the actual cause upon which EIPR was founded in 2002. My reservation about their performance is they are trying to stay as far as possible from being stigmatized as an LGBT NGO or an NGO that works "excessively" on such issues. I have been around at the trial of the 7 young gay men who got arrested last year. It's true that the EIPR was providing legal support, and they deserve to be commended, but I think it goes too far to describe the efforts as "devoted".

·        Last, I'm not sure if it is getting worse. It seems to me that there is an escalating sense of identity among homosexuals, and also a sense of community and unity somehow. In comparison with those years when homosexuals' spaces where actually cracked down regularly, I think we are standing a bit far from stating "it gets worse", yet equally far from saying "it gets better".

Obama Makes History By Citing Gay Rights in an Inaugural Address - ABC News

"Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well," Obama said in his address on the Capitol steps after his swearing in.

Obama also mentioned the word Stonewall when citing milestones of the civil right struggle. It was a reference to a riot and subsequent protests over a police raid in June 1969 of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City's Greenwich Village. The president mentioned it along with the first women's rights convention held in Seneca Falls, N.Y., in 1848 and the civil rights march in Selma, Ala., in 1965.

Saudi activists say they won't be silenced

(CNN) - As he was falling asleep, the father of five turned to his wife and said he hopes it will all be worth it someday.

Maybe someday, Mohammed Al-Qahtani said, his daughter be able to walk somewhere without a male guardian. Maybe someday, she'll be able to drive a car without fear of arrest.

"Maybe I'm dreaming," Al-Qahtani said. "My newborn daughter, maybe one day she will vote for the prime minister in Saudi Arabia.

"Of course, there will be a price to be paid, and we are more than willing to pay that price."

Wolfe: End culture of rape in 2013

Gloria Steinem and I have written about how acult of masculinity is behind the constant violation of women around the world -- that some men brutalize women against their own self-interest because of an addiction to control or domination. To put it plainly: Rape is not about sex.

Opinion: Misogyny in India -- We are all guilty

"Rape is about violence," Steinem says, "proving 'masculine' superiority; often inserting guns and other objects into women's bodies; playing out hostility to other men by invading the bodies of 'their' females, including old women and babies; occupying wombs with sperm of a conquering group; owning female bodies as the means of reproduction; and raping men and boys to make them as inferior as females."
